I have spent a lot of time looking for jobs over a long period of time. Personally, I find that newspaper classifeds are a 99.9% waste of time; because it takes nothing to put an ad in and no one ever cancels a want ad if the job is filled.
What I have done is go to where I want to work (regardless of there being no position advertised) and say, "Hey, I'd like to work here as a such-and-such. Here's my resume." The first time I did this, I worked at the place for seven years. The second place, five years.
The lesson here is a question of competition: if a zillion people are applying for one job, you won't stand out. If you have no competition, you really look good.
Wo! That's a great idea!
